Yard vacuums can be one of the best tools for removing leaf clutter. However there are some things you should look for before investing in these machines. Because they are robust heavy machines they are among the most expensive tools for picking up leaves and that means they are naturally the most expensive.

The proper machine will offer years of trouble free service which will mean a good payback for the investment. Just be sure to consider the following before making a purchase decision.

First as already stated these are big heavy machines. With motors in the 6 hp range these units can easily tip the scales at 150 pounds or more. This weight can be a detriment if the operator is not hefty enough to push the machine around the lawn especially as the bag gets loaded. Because of this it is a good idea to consider a self propelled model especially if you have a large lot.

It is especially important to make sure the axles and wheels have either bushings or even better bearings. In an inexpensive model the axles might be supported only through a hole in sheet metal which can soon wear and elongate allowing the machine to wobble when used.

Because of the nature of the material you will be vacuuming there is always the possibility of a clog somewhere in the machine. Try to determine if reaching any clogs will be a simple matter of undoing a couple of snaps or fasteners and not being faced with the necessity of using tools to remove access panels.If the model has a vacuum hose these can be very prone to clogs and should be easily disconnected to access and clear the problem.

If the machine uses replaceable bags you need to consider the cost of these items. A little research can reveal some defects while not critical to the operation will be a nuisance to the operator. If the machine produces excessive dust or if the controls are difficult to reach or manipulate this can be tiresome.

Some owners of various models have complained about the difficulty of pulling the starter cord. Because of the heavy construction and large motors it would be a good idea to consider who will be operating the machine and try to pick a model that is not hard to start.

With any model some consideration should be given to the area to be vacuumed. Using these machines on a gravel driveway or any area where stones may be sucked into the machine should be avoided. Stones or other metal bolts or any heavy object could damage interior parts. In questionable areas it would be better to use a leaf blower or rake to move the leaves onto the lawn before vacuuming.

A well built machine will be a welcome toll during leaf pickup season. The investment can save lots of wear and tear on the homeowner. If you do a little research before making a purchase and keep up the needed maintenance a yard vacuum will serve you well.

One final note of caution. When operating any mechanical lawn or garden tool always wear safety glasses or goggles and hearing protection is absolutely a must.
